When I was small I remember totally not understanding why movies always had grown ups pinching the cheeks of little kids. It seemed weird and mean. However, now that I've been married for a while and want to start a family I find I have this strange desire to pinch the round cheeks of every little baby I see. I am now fully aware that I have baby fever... and I've got it bad.
We spent Saturday night hanging out with some married friends and their 18 month old nephew. Oh. My. Goodness. I could have just taken him home with me.
On the off chance that you don't already know, I have PCOS. This is stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine PCOS is:
Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition in which there is an imbalance
of a woman's female sex hormones. This hormone imbalance may cause
changes in the menstrual cycle, skin changes, small cysts in the ovaries, trouble getting pregnant, and other problems.
I found this out when I had trouble getting pregnant. I tried to take hormones to fix the issue, but my hormonal imbalance is so great that the simple fertility treatments didn't work. I say simple because I might be able to conceive if I did some crazy expensive medical procedures. However, LJ and I agree that with so many kids out there needing homes, it seems silly to pay a lot of money just so your kid is biological. I know this isn't a particularly popular belief right now, especially with the rise of infertility in America. But I just can't imagine spending over 20k to get pregnant. And that's assuming it works. Many couples spend horrendous amounts of money and then end up where they started, only older and poorer.
For this reason, LJ and I will be adopting. Many people think this costs just as much as the fertility treatments. Don't get me wrong, it can, but it doesn't have to. We plan on being Foster-To-Adopt certified. This means we'll get kids for free, in fact the government will pay us money to take care of kids. This is a big topic and I'm definitely not going to tackle it all in one post. I just wanted to lay some groundwork because as soon as LJ and I have a house we'll be starting the classes to be certified. I'm sure many more posts on this topic will be on the way (sorry if you only like reading about house stuff!).
