Why I'm not an artist...

My whole life my mother has called me her 'artist'. She means it as a compliment, because I enjoy painting, sewing, drawing, ect. However, it's always made me want to go "I am not an artist!" Why do I have this desire? Because people like Agnes Cecile are in this world and to put us in the same category is an insult to Agnes. I just recently discovered her work and can't stop looking at it. She did these time lapse videos of her painting that are just SO beautiful to watch.

I've never liked watercolor because it always seems so weak and pastel. This woman has changed my mind about a whole medium. Her work is breathtaking.  I would love to buy this print for our bedroom, it seems to sum up how I feel about LJ:

I also would love to put this piece in my living room. The color is so pretty and it is just SO striking. I think it would catch the eye from across the room:

This one I don't think would actually fit into my house, but I just want to show it because I love it. To me, it is the perfect picture of what it's like to step outside on that first truly cold day of winter and just exhale to watch your breath.

Right now I think I'm a long way away from getting to spend real money on art, but I would love to some day own one of these pieces.

And now you can see why I don't consider myself an artist. What this woman does is truly a gift. I may be a little talented, but there is just no comparison.

  1. It's funny, I'm "the artist" in my family too. And, like you, I always argue against it. Maybe non-creatives confuse "artsy" with "artist". Or maybe we don't give ourselves enough credit. We are probably both artists in our own right, to some extent. But we aren't professionals like this Agnes chick, so when people call us "artists" we feel like we're cheating the real artists out of the titles they totally deserve.

Watercolor has always fascinated me, ever since elementary school. It was the one medium I REALLY couldn't control - it's so easy to mess up. And unlike acrylic, you can't just paint over it and make it better - everything turns to mud!

It's crazy to watch her work - she's not even using something she sketched first - she knows WHERE to put the pieces in a blank space - that's astounding! And she does people, which to me is the hardest thing you can do....crazy! And awesome.

Prints for now. We'll be able to buy large originals...someday. (:
