Office Inspiration

I've had a lot of people tell me they are impressed with how I know exactly what I want. This is not due to any special power, but to time spent researching. When approaching a new room, I try to base it all on something I love. Something that inspires me. Most of the time, that's a photo. Some rooms of our house are based on inspiration I found years ago. Things I saved because I knew some day I would want to build a room in my house around the idea. Our nursery accent wall is like that. I've had the idea to do a color themed nursery for a while now. There are also rooms in our home that I don't have any inspiration for yet, so they remain untouched. Our guest bedroom, hall closet, and study are all examples. I just don't know I want them to look like yet. I'm against just 'picking a wall color' and going with it. I don't want to have to repaint it later when I finally find inspiration. So, these rooms remain relatively the same as when we bought the house until inspiration finally hits.

Where do I find inspiration? Design blogs, home tours, friend's facebook status, and of course: Pinterest. If you're not on Pinterest, let me tell you, it's a very useful tool for gathering inspiration. If you follow my boards (look me up! Kris Decker) then you already know I have a board for each room of the house. As I find inspiring materials, I add it to a room's board. Then when I have enough pins I look at them all and get a better understanding of what the room should look like.

It took me a long time, but I think I've finally figured out how I want to paint the study. A friend sent me this picture and it was love at first sight:

Obviously the furniture in this room is not exactly the type of stuff LJ and I own, but I love the idea of a large horizontal stripe. I've been looking for a way to use a very bold green color in the study, but I didn't want to paint the whole room green or it would be overwhelming and feel small. I think this could work though. And now that I have an idea for the walls, I can start gathering ideas for all the other pieces.

I love this part of the design process. Everything is possible!
