Adoption - quick update
It seems like one of the questions I hear most often, both online and in person is "So, where are you guys in the adoption process?" It seems that by blogging about it, and being very open when I talk about it in person, we're going through the process pretty publicly. The outpouring of support by everyone we know has been such a blessing and has made me so grateful for our wonderful friends. That said, I figured I'd update anyone who's curious. The answer is: we're waiting. We've turned in all our paperwork and now our agency is working on getting our background check. The background check required isn't the same 15 minute check that someone runs when you are looking at a new apartment or a new job or whatever. There is a specific type of check that foster parents have to have. I believe it is with the FBI's sex offender registry. The agency is required to get one of these with every state we've lived in in the last 5 years. We've lived in Texas and DC in this time period. It seems that while it's easy for the agency to get the Texas background check, the DC one takes longer. As someone who lived in DC and saw how the red tape capital of the world worked, this doesn't surprise me at all. Our agency told us that there is a couple that has been waiting on their Virginia background check for 3 MONTHS. So, needless to say we're happy we didn't live there. Anyway, this puts us in a sort of holding pattern. The agency can't move forward until we're cleared. Don't get me wrong, our house isn't in perfect shape for our home study yet, but we're close. I plan on having everything completed very soon. Then we'll just have to wait for DC to clear us so we can schedule the home study and finish the certification process. It's nice to be this close, but I wish the government moved a little bit faster.... oh well, it will all work out. God's timing is always perfect.
