I didn't label this one as a 'project' because we're not doing the labor ourself. But it still is a big change for our house - we're getting a new roof! And the even better part is we're getting it for FREE! I'll explain more in a future post. For now, let's talk shingles.
So, I cam home late from work last night to find a book of shingle samples. LJ informed me that the roof will probably be put on next week (pending weather cooperation) and asked me to pick out which shingle we want to us so the roofers can start buying them.
Um..... pick out shingles? I'm pretty darn opinionated by nature (who me?) and even more opinionated about the decor of my house. Normally I've done research and thought over the big decisions I make. But I have never even thought about shingles, let alone made a decision on what I want. I was at a loss. Here's just some of my options. You'll have to forgive the poor photo quality, I took these pictures when it was dark outside.
Luckily, as I was looking at the settle differences in the samples, the roof guy called LJ to hammer out some details. While they were on the phone the pro mentioned that we want to pick a shingle that has some small bits in it that match the color of our brick. It's the best way to make sure everything will match when you're done. I was so happy to get this advise, it gave me a direction. We've decided to go with Colonial Slate.
A brochure they left us has a picture of a house with this color shingles, so you can get a better idea of what it looks like when it's one a home:
See the little flecks of red? I believe these match our brick. Here's our house if you forgot what it looks like (really old pic):
I have to admit that I had to look at pictures of our place to remember what color our roof is... turns out the old one is gray too, so I'm not making a huge change here. (Which is good because now I don't need to worry about whether or not our home owners association allows my color.)
So, lesson learned here is; if you ever find yourself picking out a roof - look for flecks that match your brick. Hopefully I'll have some pictures of my new roof to share very soon!
Great choice! The pro you talked to was right about choosing shingles that matched your bricks somehow. Some people don’t have bricks though, or would prefer metal sheets over shingles, so the main tip is to pick a color that will match your siding or walls. Dark roofs are quite trendy these days, so that might be another thing to consider as well.
ReplyDeleteBy choosing shingles that don’t look very different from your old one, it’s easier to determine if they would look good with the exterior of your home. Anyway, I like Colonial Slate, too, so great job choosing it. It feels as though you are keeping with tradition, which is always a good thing. How did the re-roofing go?

It's a good thing that LJ helped you out. True! It's not just the roof's durability we're talking about here, colors are also important. It must be able to make our house more attractive. Well, that brochure is quite handy. The color of that shingles certainly matches the colors of your bricks!
ReplyDeleteThe first thing to consider prior to choosing a shingle color should be the exterior paint color. Keeping in mind that an inadequate match of exterior paint color and shingle color could result in the lessening of an exterior's overall appearance.

Lots and lots of decisions to still be made. Roofing is such a vital part of the project and making the right decision with regards to color and type is always one of the hardest to make. My husband and I are also renovating our roof and its has required all the help we can get. Thank you for sharing.
